Traveling Alone is the Ultimate Indulgence

Alone on the high seas, eating what you want and planning your day the way you want. Suddenly you find yourself inspired by the movie Eat. Pray. Love. "You just want to go someplace where you can just marvel at something" as said so perfectly by Ms. Julia Roberts. You want to enjoy yourself. You want to meet new friends. And see the world.

Traveling alone is the ultimate indulgence. You get to do what you want when you want to do it. You don't have to worry about someone else having a good time. You can experience anything your heart desires. You can stay on the move 13 hours a day without someone telling you how tired they are. No matter what type of travel you choose to do i.e. a cruise or a land tour, you will always meet new people, but you won't be responsible for their happiness. You will only have you to think about. As liberating as solo travel is, one should be aware that there are scam artists that may try to befriend and take advantage of you. Pay attention to your surroundings.

Traveling Alone Safely

  • Find out how far it is from the airport to your hotel and ask the taxi drive up front how much it will cost to get there. Solo travelers are more likely to get taken advantage of.
  • Trust your instinct: If something doesn't feel right, don't do it.
  • Make copies of your identification and store it in multiple locations.
  • Stick to open and public places, especially at night. This is not the time to go wandering down dark alleys.
  • Don't draw attention to yourself with flashy clothes or jewelry.
  • Don't indicate that you are traveling alone. For example, if you ask for directions say, "I am meeting a friend at the ancient church. Can you give me directions?"
  • Check your maps before leaving your hotel. A lone person checking a map is going to be a target for the unscrupulous.
  • Leave an itinerary with someone at home. Check in my phone or email on a regular basis.

Solo Cruising

In the past, the thought of being a single traveler on a cruise ship meant taking out a loan just to pay for the cabin. Thank goodness for NCL who introduced "Epic Studios"when the awesome Norwegian Epic debuted. Talk about marvel! The studios are designed specifically for the solo traveler but more importantly so is the pricing. No more double occupancy requirements and single supplements that can double the cost that is typically 200% of the cruise fare because you must pay for the absent "roommate." The concept was such a hit that they'll be more to come when Norwegian introduces more new ships in the coming years. Royal Caribbean followed suit when it unveiled cabins for solo travelers with the revamped Radiance of the Seas this past June.

But Wait, There's More!

Several cruise lines are catching on to the singles wave. While they may not have specificly designed cabins for a single passenger, they are offering reduced single supplements or waiving it altogether. Avalon Waterways is celebrating the new movement by offering river cruises for the solo traveler on select itineraries in October. Ah, a cruise experience through the Danube River with me, myself and I?—Now that has my name written all over it. We hope you are inspired to book your own solo trip! Whether you choose to go by sea or land, go somewhere that you can just marvel at something. Where will you visit?
